Noah And The Whale
You have an album coming out
soon. How long did it take you, and why have you made it?
Noah: Technically we’ve recorded two albums this year! The first one is out ‘real’ album, and that took about three weeks.
And then we also recorded a punk album in two days!
Whale: Two nights!
Noah: More like ten hours’ work. And that is probably the better album! I don’t even know if it will get released, but hopefully!
How is it being on tour with Adam Green? I know we’re only one show
in…
Noah: Yeah the one show was great! [laughs] it was good!
Whale: Normally it take a couple shows before you even interact with the band, but they’ve been really welcoming, really lovely.
Noah: Also I think, like, the thing about the Adam Green lot is that they’re all friends. When we’ve toured with bands before, you feel like everyone is friends but
at the same time there’s the element of business about it. But this it just feels like it’s just some friends on tour, y’know? It’s nice.
Are you doing any
more touring this year?
Noah: We’ve got a headline tour, end of May beginning of June, and then we’re doing festivals. Actually we just found out
we’re doing this tour which is like a tour of the forests around England, with, I think, Fionn Regan, Mystery Jets, and The Zutons.
Are you going to Sherwood Forest?
Noah: Hopefully!
Whale: We are!
Noah: Definitely?
Whale: Definitely! I can confirm that.
Noah: Brilliant. Then yes, we are.
Whale: That being the most famous forest that was the one I looked out for.
Noah: What about New Forest?
Whale: New Forest is, erm, a borderline myth. If you said the New Forest, people wouldn’t know where to turn up.
Noah: What about Forest Whitaker?
Whale: Everyone knows where he is. But he moves. He is geographically unreliable. I’ve chatted to him about it before, he admits it’s a problem.
Noah: Sorry.
Right. Is there anyone who influences you a lot?
Noah: I guess musically, I like Adam a lot. I guess more American stuff than English stuff probably. My favourite guy is
this guy called Adrian Orange, he also plays as Thanksgiving. He’s actually in a mental asylum at the minute though.
That makes things difficult.
Whale: The sound-proofing is meant to be pretty good in those places.
What do you think of girls with guitars?
Noah: There’s a woman called Dianne Clarke who I like a lot. She’s a girl who plays guitar. And Laura
Marling.
Whale: Laura Marling. She’s pretty good, she plays guitar. Regina Spektor.
Noah: She plays piano though.
Whale: It definitely works and it’s a great thing.
If you were to have a film made about your lives, what genre would it
be?
Noah: Horror, probably.
Blimey.
Whale: Probably some kind of….
Noah: It would be an erotic thriller.
Whale: …an erotic thriller.
Noah: Like Basic Instinct 2. I’d play the girl. The open-leg scene would be pretty horrific. I’d be wearing a kilt.
Whale: We should have edited but, y’know, I like it natural.
Who would you have play you?
Noah: Ermmm, probably Brad. Or Johnny.
Whale: I’d like to say on record I’d like Phillip Seymore Hoffman to play me, for obvious reasons.
Noah: Morgan Freeman maybe.
Jackie Chan…?
Noah: Jackie Chan would nail it.
Whale: Jackie Chan could do a good ‘you’. Amazing moves under pressure.
Noah: I love the lyric “if a film was made about you, you’d have to play you, because no one else could pull off the s**t that you do.” Can I say that?
We’ll just bleep it out.
Whale: That’s a good lyric.
If you could be any musician past or present, who would it be?
Whale: I would have liked to have written some of Tom Wait’s albums.
Noah: Probably Beethoven. He was pretty good.
Whale: He had a traumatic life though.
Noah: Hmmmm, okay. Well what are you basing it on? Who’s had the most fun? Or who’s the best?
Whale: who’s had the most fun? Who’s body of work…. I dunno! I was doing it by body of work.
Noah: That’s what I was doing it by!
With that criteria is has to be The Beatles, surely?
Noah: Errrrrr……
Whale: Errrrrr….
Noah: Let’s not get into a Beatles debate.
Do you not like them?
Noah: I think George Harrison is brilliant.
He’s probably my favourite. I called some Shaun Lennon in here earlier on. But it wasn’t
him. Fairly embarrassing. Why do you make music?
Noah: Well! Ermmm, why not? Every reason, every reason.
Whale: [said in the most unenthusiastic voice ever, but not put-on] Because it makes me incredibly happy.
