Jose Vanders
Jose,
why on earth are you in Lincoln on your 18th birthday?
[giggles] Good question! Basically I got a call from the promoter here saying ‘we’d love to have you up on a show’, and I
said ‘yeah wicked, great’, and he said ‘what about April the 5th?’ and I said ‘oh no I can’t, that’s my birthday.’ And then I sort of mulled it over for a couple of weeks and I thought actually that
would be quite cool, I’ve never been to Lincoln, never been this far up north, I’ll bring a party bus of 17 people and have a party up here!
Sounds like a good plan. Maybe when I’m 18…[Jose laughs], I could maybe come down to
London with a party bus.
Totally! Do it! Stay round mine. You must be at least 30?
I’m at least 20.
Really?!
So Jose, you’ve only just turned 18, you’re a talented girl. When was is that you first started tickling
the ivories?
Well actually there’s a picture of me when I was two years old playing the piano. So I started sort of ‘tinkling’ when I
was two [giggles] the ivories that is! When I was about six or seven I started having lessons, doing the whole classical thing. And then around thirteen, fourteen, I started writing songs to
myself.
What has happened from writing songs as a thirteen year old, to now being the new face of
BBC Three?
I don’t know! I’m very lucky! It’s all Myspace! Totally! Basically I uploaded some songs like two years ago, and nothing
really happened. Then last August I decided to make a CD, just because, y’know, I fancied it. And so I recorded a CD in my neighbour’s living room and put that out, and then for some reason it sort
of just took off from there. And ever since then….like, literally, I’m probably one of the luckiest people I know! I don’t mean it like that! But do you know what I mean? I…I don’t quite understand
myself how it’s happened, but it did.
Here’s something we ask everybody; if you could choose someone to play you in a film
about your life, who would it be, and why?
That is a hard question! Erm… probably Scarlet Johansen because I look exactly like her [laughs]!
We asked Lethal Bizzle this and he said Bruce Willis.
[laughs] yeah, no I can see that working!
Tim Westwood said Dr Dre.
Errrrr….yeah okay…..
Okay, let’s rephrase it. If a film was made of your life, what genre would it
be?
One of those really arty, weird contemporary films, like a film noir French films, where nothing happens, and you just
have a video camera, and you just sort of see me about my daily business, just buttering toast and stuff. Y’know, just really weird, no speech.
That links quite nicely with your lyrics. Where do you get your inspiration
from?
Errrrmm, well I don’t know. Everywhere really. Paintings, and literature, and poetry, and that sounds really pretentious.
And now the good stuff, like boys and going out and having good days. Just like, mates and stuff.
Earlier this afternoon, something special happened.
Oh this afternoon? I went to the shopping centre up the road and I played in front of Top Shop. And it was a bit bizarre
because they had all these security guards and they sort of cornered off a bit of the shopping mall and loads of people turned up and I sang to the shopping mall! And it was quite good actually,
because I was saying earlier that at the beginning of the year I wrote a list of a hundred things to do, and three of them I did today! Which is play to over three hundred people, play a Steinway,
and busk! So I’m taking that as busking!
Perfect! Well, what a day.
I know! This has been one of the best days I’ve ever had in my life!
And you turned 18.
There you go, all in one day.
The driving licence is now valid. Good news.
Valid, yeah it’s exciting!
I’m on a Facebook group called ‘I’m going to Latitude Festival. Who’s with
me!?’
I’m on that!
I know you are. Who are you looking forward to seeing?
I’m playing! Oh no! sshhhh! No I’m not!
What?
I shouldn’t have said that! [zips up mouth] Take that back! Erm… yeah I’m really excited, I think Sigur Ros are playing?
One of my favourite bands, and errrr, lots of other bands… so it should be really good yeah, I’m looking forward to it.
